With a lot of myths and products out there it can very confusing to understand this embarrassing skin problem, so I’ve decided to put together ten things you must know about acne, here they are:

  • Isn’t only a puberty/teenager skin problem, it can also happen to adults between 20 and 45 years old
  • It is an inflammatory disease and physical irritation, picking the blemish will aggravate this inflamattory response and perpetuate the acne cycle
  • Ice can reduce inflammation and swelling, so instead of picking the skin, ice the area and apply your topical treatment recommended by your esthetician or dermatologist
  • When getting treated for acne, avoid scrubbing or manual exfoliation
  • Women are more likely than men to develop acne as an adult
  • Dirty skin, consuming chocolate or greasy foods DO NOT cause acne
  • It can be hereditary (if your parents had acne, you might get it too)
  • Greasy makeup and starting or stopping birth control pills CAN cause acne
  • It will not go away on it’s own, it does need to be professionaly treated
  • In some cases, limiting dairy in your diet will help clear your acne
